Truncation
Use with all keyword searches
Use ? to find variants of your search term:
child?  finds child, children, childhood.
?scope  finds microscope, periscope, telescope.
nano?technology  finds nanotechnology, nanobiotechnology.
Use % to find single-letter variants:
organi%ation  finds organization, organisation.
encyclop%%dia  finds encyclopaedia, encyclopoedia, encyclopædia.
Keyword Automatically adds and between search terms:
rowling potter  finds all records containing both rowling and potter.
Use quotes to search phrases:
"french revolution"
Results are ranked by relevance. Sort search results from new to old or old to new to locate the most relevant works by year.
NOTE: Boolean operators and, or, and not in the "Search for" box are treated as search terms:
rowling and potter finds records that contain and as well as rowling and potter.
Keyword Expert Use Boolean operators and, or, not to combine search terms:
salinger and catcher
map or atlas
textiles not clothing
Use quotes to search phrases: "french revolution"
Use parentheses to group terms: (child? or teen?) and "learning disabilities"
Use field codes to limit your search further.
Title Type the first words of the title: far from the madding crowd
Omit beginning articles: A, An, The, Der, El, L', La, etc.
Journal Title Type the first words of the title: journal of architectural engineering
Omit beginning articles: A, An, The, Der, El, L', La, etc.
Title Keyword Use when the exact title is not known:  mockingbird  finds all works with mockingbird in the title.
Automatically adds and between search terms:  civil war grant  finds all works with all three search words in the title.
Use ? to find variants of your search term:  heartbreak? genius  finds A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius.
